Malawi child killed during series of earthquakes

BLANTYRE, Malawi — A police official says a 1-year-old child has died in Malawi following a series of earthquakes in the southern African country.

Karongo police spokesman Enock Levason said that the toddler died Tuesday when a kitchen collapsed, and six others were rushed to the hospital.

Levason said there could be more casualties and that most of the mud-and-thatch houses built along the epicenter of the earthquake have crumbled.

Parts of Malawi that lie on the Great Rift Valley are prone to earthquakes and tremors, according to geologists.

Malawi’s geological survey said Tuesday’s earthquake was a 5.9-magnitude temblor. It was the strongest in a three-day series of earthquakes and aftershocks.
