MELBOURNE - Scientists have designed a clothes peg using supercomputers and quantum chemistry - the high tech peg can withstand the sun for longer.

Researchers at the Australian National University in Canberra modelled polymer degradation to ensure that the plastic was stronger, reports News.com.au.

The theory was that pegs and plastics deteriorated because of a process called autoxidation.

However, they found that this was not correct, concluding instead that damage occurred because most polymer chains contain a small number of defective structures, formed during their manufacture.

The study will be published in the Royal Chemistry journal, Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry. (ANI)
