Caribbean bird makes rare appearance in Florida

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — A Caribbean bird has made a rare appearance in Everglades National Park.

The National Park Service says a birding guide spotted a Cuban Pewee last weekend near the Long Pine Key picnic area in the park.

The Cuban Pewee is native to Cuba and the Bahamas. It’s recognized by a white crescent behind its eye. Experts say its rare for the bird to visit Florida.

The Florida Ornithological Society is reviewing photographs and recordings of the bird’s song. It’s potentially the third confirmed sighting of the Cuban Pewee in the United States, and the first in Everglades National Park.

The park service says bird watchers from as far away as West Virginia, Indiana and California have come to the Everglades to see the bird.
