Snow closes Srinagar-Jammu national highway

SRINAGAR - The strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for traffic Saturday evening due to fresh snowfall in the Jawahar tunnel area of the highway.

“Traffic would only be restored Sunday after snow-clearance. No passenger vehicle are stranded on the highway,” G.M. Wadoo, Superintendent of Police (traffic), Rural Kashmir, told IANS.

He advised travellers not to undertake the journey before contacting local traffic control room. There are many avalanche and landslide prone areas along the 300 km-long highway

This is the second incident of the highway closing due to snow in the last fortnight. The highway was closed for traffic due to heavy snowfall in the Bannihal area Dec 30, 2010.
