CHANDIGARH - Many parts of Punjab and Haryana saw light rains Friday morning and the region got a much-needed respite from the intense cold as the mercury rose by three to four degrees Celsius.

The joint capital city of Chandigarh woke up to a slight drizzle early morning and the minimum temperature was recorded at a pleasant 8.2 degrees Celsius.

The last nearly 10 days had seen the city shivering with the minimum temperatures wavering between 1 to 5 degrees Celsius.

The city saw 2.6 mm of rainfall Thursday night as well.

Haryana’s Karnal town was the warmest in the region at a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius Friday. Ambala was 9.7 degrees, Narnaul saw a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius while Hisar town recorded 9.3 degrees.

“We have registered a rise in the mercury in almost all parts of Punjab and Haryana. We also had some respite from fog, except for Hisar and Karnal towns, which had dense fog this (Friday) morning,” a meteorological official said here.

“Showers lashed most parts of Punjab, Chandigarh and a few places in Haryana on Thursday night. We are expecting more rainfall during the next 24 hours,” he added.

Amritsar and Gurdaspur in Punjab also received rainfall in the morning. While Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 7.2 degrees, in Ludhiana it was 6.7 degrees.

Patiala, which saw 5.1 mm rainfall Thursday night, recorded a low of 6.4 degrees Celsius.
