HYDERABAD - Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has cautioned the central government against introducing the genetically modified Bt. Brinjal without proper tests to address the concerns about its impact on human health and environment.
State Agriculture Minister Raghuveera Reddy told reporters that the chief minister has written a letter to the central government drawing its attention to the issues being raised by farmers, agriculture scientists and NGOs about the adverse affects of Bt Brinjal.
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests is expected to take a decision on the issue Feb 10.
Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) had last year given its nod for the commercial release of Bt. Brinjal.
The government decided to conduct public hearings after a member of the committee alleged all necessary tests were not carried out before taking the decision.
