Cyclone Laila to weaken by Thursday afternoon: IMD

NEW DELHI - Cyclone Laila, which has hit the southern parts of the country and claimed 10 lives, will weaken by Thursday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“The intensity of cyclone Laila has reduced in the last 12 hours and it will further weaken in the next couple of hours. But it will continue to cause heavy rainfall in the coastal areas of Godavari, Krishna, Vishakapatnam (in Andhra Pradesh) and south Orissa,” IMD director general A.K. Tyagi told reporters here Thursday morning.

Accoring to Tyagi, the cyclone will cross Bapatla and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh between 1-3 p.m.

“The cyclone is headed towards Bay of Bengal. It can re-emerge and re-intensify by May 23-24,” he added.
