NEW DELHI - The environment ministry Tuesday asked the Chhattisgarh government to take action against Jindal Power Ltd for commencing construction of a thermal power plant in the state’s Raigarh district without obtaining environment clearance.

In a letter to the Chhattisgarh environment secretary dated June 18, the environment ministry said that the company in March 2009 had applied for environment clearance for construction of thermal power plant in the state.

The company was asked to submit the draft environment impact assessment report to the state Pollution Control Board for conducting public hearings.

However, the ministry received a complaint that the company had started construction of the power plant without obtaining the clearance.

The ministry constituted a team which inspected the site in May 2010 and found the complaint was valid.

The construction was stopped and the company was asked to submit a clear proposal for the thermal power plant.
