NEW DELHI - Monsoon is unlikely to reach the Indian capital before the first week of July, the weatherman said, adding that the city remained hot Tuesday, recording a maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius.

July 29 is the normal date for the arrival of the monsoon here. But the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said it might be delayed by a few days although pre-monsoon showers are likely.

“Monsoon may not arrive before the first week of July,” an official said.

The maximum temperature Tuesday was four notches above the average for this time of the year, the official said.

“The national capital can expect another hot day Wednesday. The maximum temperature is expected to be 42 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature 30 degrees,” the official added.

According to IMD, the national capital can experience dust storm and thunderstorms Wednesday evening and at night.
