San Salvador, July 5 (IANS/EFE) Police in El Salvador seized 4,800 eggs of hawksbill turtles, a critically endangered species, imported from Nicaragua.

The eggs were seized in El Amatillo, a border area that links El Salvador to Honduras, while they were being transported in a van that entered the country Thursday, a police officer said,

Two people, one each from Guatemala and Nicaragua, were arrested.

“We wanted to make an example of this case to show we are not going to allow this kind of trafficking,” Deputy Environment Minister Lina Pohl said.
