RANCHI - An angry elephant trampled a forest official to death in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district, police said Tuesday.

K.K. Pandey, a forest ranger of Jamtara, was trying to calm down the elephant Monday when he was trampled to death in Maru village, about 350 km from here.

“The elephant entered Maru village from neighbouring West Bengal and destroyed many houses. The villagers informed Pandey about the rampaging elephant,” a police officer said.

The pachyderm is said to have killed many people in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

This is first incident in Jharkhand in which a forest official was crushed to death by an elephant.

More than 750 people have been trampled to death in the last eight years in Jharkhand.
