Flood threat again looms over Delhi

NEW DELHI - The threat of floods again looms over Delhi as Haryana released around seven lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river Sunday, an official said.

“Around 689,420 cusecs of water was discharged in river Yamuna and the water levels are still increasing. The Yamuna is flowing at 205.14 cm whereas the danger mark is 204.83 cm,” said V.P.S. Tomar, chief engineer of the Delhi flood control and irrigation department.

The officials are expecting the water level to further rise to 205.65 by 5 p.m. Monday.

However, this time round, rescue boats and booster pumps are not required as people have been evacuated from the low-lying areas.

“People have still not moved back to the low-lying areas which had been evacuated earlier. They are still living in the make shift camps,” added Tomar.

The water levels are expected to subside by the next weekend, said Tomar.
