Chinese people to select country’s 10 best scientists

BEIJING - The Chinese public will help select the country’s 10 best scientists and technicians in a vote that will show “respect for knowledge and innovation”.
The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has said the people have been invited to vote for the 50 shortlisted candidates for the honour of “China’s best scientific and technical worker”, Xinhua reported.
The public will make their choices either online or through ballots printed in newspapers from Sep 30 to Oct 14.
The candidates include an academic known for his work on combating the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the chief scientist at the China Lunar Exploration Project and a renowned Tibet-based doctor specialising in altitude sickness.
Zhang Qin, a CAST member, said the vote will show “respect for knowledge and innovation”.
The 50 shortlisted candidates were chosen from 978 people nominated as “outstanding scientists and technicians”.
