KOLKATA - A full-grown chimpanzee died after falling from a tree trunk at Alipur zoological garden in the West Bengal capital Thursday, an official said.

According to sources, the incident took place when the chimpanzee tried to jump from one tree to another. It fell from the tree trunk and received a head injury.

“Its a very unfortunate incident. We have already ordered a post mortem examination, State Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Atanu Raha said.

He said the zoo authorities had been asked to look into the matter.

We will only be able to determine the exact cause of death after we receive the post mortem report. We have also ordered an enquiry into the accident, he said.

An injured elephant calf — which was rescued from Dantan area of West Midnapore district — also died at the Alipore zoo last week. Experts said the four-and-a-half month old baby elephant died as it did not get mothers milk.
