KOLKATA - The chimpanzee, which died after falling from a tree trunk at Alipur zoological garden here, succumbed to liver and lung injuries, an expert said after the post-mortem examination Friday.

“The chimpanzee died of critical injuries in its liver and lung. We also heard that it vomited blood, which means it also suffered some internal haemorrhage,” veterinary expert Dipak Dey said.

He said the animal was not well for the past few days and was undergoing medical treatment Thursday when it suddenly came out of the cage and climbed a tree.

“We think it fell because a tranquiliser dose started working and it could not control the body,” Dey said.

The incident took place when the chimpanzee tried to jump from one tree to another. It fell from the tree trunk and received a head injury.

A departmental enquiry has also been ordered into the incident.
