Punjab, Haryana reel under sweltering heat

CHANDIGARH - People of Punjab and Haryana reeled under the scorching sun Wednesday as temperature remained way above the average.
Amritsar in Punjab recorded the highest temperature in the region at a maximum of 43.1 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the average, while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded 42 and 41.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The union territory of Chandigarh, which is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, sizzled at 41.3 degrees Celsius that was again three notches above the average.
“We are expecting thunderstorms and overcast conditions to prevail in various parts of this region tomorrow (Thursday). But they would not be enough to bring any respite from the heat. By this weekend, we can have isolated spells of rain in some parts,” an official of the Meteorological department said here.
In Haryana, Ambala, Karnal and Hisar cities registered the maximum temperature of 41.6, 41.4 and 41.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.
