Sulabh International to help clean flood-hit Ambala in Haryana

CHANDIGARH - Sulabh International, a leading social service organisation, will help the municipal corporation of Ambala city in Haryana to clean up the city in the aftermath of the flooding earlier July.
The Ambala Municipal Corporation has signed a contract with Sulabh International for two months to maintain cleanliness in the areas of Ambala city and Ambala Cantt, about 45 km from here.
“If the experiment succeeds, a long-term agreement would be made with Sulabh International for this cleanliness project,” an official said here Friday.
The official spokesman said on an average, there used to be 100 tonnes of garbage in these two cities daily. Following the floods, the quantity of waste in these cities has increased to 145 tonnes per day.
“The municipal corporation is facing difficulty in lifting the increased quantity of garbage due to shortage of employees and equipment,” he added.
He said as per the contract, Sulabh International will depute 100 cleanliness workers (Safai Karamcharis) each at Ambala city and Ambala Cantt, and would provide tractor-trolley, JCB and other equipment for collecting and lifting waste.
“The job of cleanliness would be undertaken under the supervision and guidelines of municipal corporation. A sum of Rs.12.25 lakh per month would be paid to Sulabh International by the corporation for this purpose,” the official added.
Both Ambala city and Ambala Cantt saw flood waters entering several areas following breaches in rivers and canals in adjoining areas following heavy rains July 6 and 7.
