Floodwaters recede in Haryana district

CHANDIGARH - The flood situation in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district improved gradually Monday as the water level in various rivulets passing through the region substantially receded, officials here said.

“The flood situation is totally under control. The water level of river Yamuna has considerably receded and its flow was only 30,000 cusecs yesterday (Sunday) evening,” Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sanghwan told IANS.

Due to heavy rains in the region, the water flow in the Yamuna had touched an alarming 90,000 cusecs Saturday.

“We have evacuated all flood victims to safe locations and currently no one is stuck in floodwaters. We are keenly monitoring the situation and all arrangements are in place to handle any kind of emergency,” Sanghwan said.

According to district officials, two people were killed due to floods in Yamunanagar Sunday, taking the overall flood toll in Haryana to 35.

“Nearly 60 villages were inundated and hundreds of acres of agriculture land in Bilaspur and Chahhrauli sub-divisions in Yamunanagar were submerged in flood water,” an official said.

Different districts of Haryana including Ambala, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Sirsa and Fatehabad were badly affected by floods in July.
