WASHINGTON - The White House will install solar panels to provide electricity and hot water for the first family and its staff, an official said.

“There will be solar panels and a solar hot water heater on the roof of the White House” by the end of spring of 2011, Energy Secretary Steven Chu wrote in his department’s official blog Tuesday.

Chu said the solar installations will be part of a department of energy project, which will be used to demonstrate that US solar technology is “available, reliable, and ready to install in homes throughout the country”, Xinhua reported.

President Barack Obama has a strong commitment to “solar technologies and the jobs they will create”, he said.
