NEW DELHI - The union environment and forests ministry Monday sought details from the Tamil Nadu government about the impact of a proposed distillery on the ground water in Thanjavur district.

In a letter to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, the ministry said that its expert appraisal committee (EAC) in August had sought details about the impact of a proposed distillery of Kings India Chemicals Corporation Limited on ground water in Vadaseri village of Thanjavur district.

The ministry in August also sought comments on the project from the Central Ground Water Board.

“The ministry has not received any information in this regard and the authorities concerned are requested to send details on a priority basis,” the letter said.

There have been several demonstrations against the project. Local people have alleged that the distillery would extract the groundwater, seriously affecting the environment and agricultural.
