Four more die in freezing Uttar Pradesh, toll climbs to 63

LUCKNOW - Icy winds continued to lash large parts of India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, where the cold wave claimed four more lives on Friday, taking this winter’s toll to 63.
Brief sunshine pierced through a thick blanket of fog and a cover of clouds to bring a bit of respite from the biting chill in the afternoon. But as soon as the sun set, it was back to freezing conditions.
While the minimum temperature across the state ranged between 1.4 degrees and 5 degrees Celsius, the maximum during the day stood between 12 and 15 degrees.
According to the state Met directorate, Churk town in Mirzapur district remained the coldest in the state with mercury sticking at 1.4 degrees, followed by Agra at 1.6 degrees. Friday’s temperatures were well below what is the average for this time of the season.
Varanasi recorded the minimum of 2.6 degrees and the maximum of 15.2 degrees, followed by Lucknow at 4 degrees and 12 degrees respectively.
The temperature in Allahabad ranged between 5 degrees and 15.9 degrees.
The Met office has forecast similar weather conditions for the next three days.
