Iranian mourners, opposition bury slain physicist
TEHRAN, Iran — The slain Iranian physics professor who had backed the country’s opposition leader has been buried in a cemetery in northern Tehran.
Hundreds of mourners and opposition supporters attended the funeral on Thursday.
The professor, Masoud Ali Mohammadi, died when a bomb-rigged motorcycle exploded on Tuesday morning outside his home.
The semiofficial Fars news agency, which is close to the hard-liners, says some people at the funeral carried green banners in a show of support for the opposition.
The report says they chanted “deviant slogans.”
Eyewitnesses say half of about 1,000 people at the funeral were opposition members. They say there were some minor scuffles with police during the burial.
No one has claimed responsibility for Mohammadi’s slaying.
