Spirit AeroSystems pays hazardous waste penalty

WICHITA, Kan. — Aircraft parts maker Spirit AeroSystems has agreed to pay $132,500 in penalties to settle alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations at its Wichita plant.

The consent agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency was announced Wednesday.

The agency said a 2006 inspection found violations of federal rules on transporting hazardous waste. Inspectors also found the plant was operating as a waste treatment facility without an adequate containment system.

As part of the settlement, Spirit AeroSystems has certified its facility is now in compliance.

The company said in an e-mail that it disagrees with the EPA’s allegations, but reached the settlement to resolve the claims.
