Greenpeace hangs banner on Polish ministry
WARSAW, Poland — Greenpeace activists have hung a huge banner from the roof of Poland’s Environment Ministry demanding the preservation of a primeval forest they say is under threat.
Greenpeace spokeswoman Katarzyna Guzek says the demonstration Wednesday was meant to pressure the government to stop logging in the Bialowieza forest in eastern Poland, Europe’s last primeval forest.
Guzek says only 17 percent of the Bialowieza forest is protected as a national park, while the government allows logging elsewhere for furniture and paper production.
