CHENNAI - Contrary to an earlier announcement, industrialist Ratan Tata was left out from the list of Jawaharlal Nehru Award recipients at the 98th Indian Science Congress Monday.

Inaugurating the five-day premier science event at SRM University in Kattankulathur near here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh awarded six Nobel laureates including V. Ramakrishnan, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, president of Indian Science Congress K.C. Pandey had announced that Tata will be awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award by the prime minister for his contribution to society, adding that his Nano car had made comfortable commuting affordable to the middle class.

However, Pandey Monday said that Tata’s name was not announced as he could not make it to the venue and will be awarded later.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen too could not make it to the ceremony.
