Land title, green violations in Adarsh more serious: Navy chief

NEW DELHI - Indian Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma Wednesday said the Adarsh Housing Society building has more serious issues like land title and violation of environment laws than security concerns raised by the naval base in Colaba, Mumai.
There are more serious issues such as land title and environment laws, Verma told reporters on the sidelines of an NCC Camp here.
He was asked if the 31-storey building close to the naval base in the upscale Colaba area of Mumbai posed a serious security threat to the nearby defence establishments.
The Adarsh building came up within the naval station’s security zone on a piece of land that was in the army’s possession from 1942 to 2000.
The defence ministry and the army had ordered a probe into the issue after some officers issued a no-objection certificate to the private society for construction of the building.
The case of defence officers’ involvement in allowing Adarsh complex to come up on defence land has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a comprehensive probe.
Asked for his opinion on the environment ministry’s recommendation for demolition of the building for Coastal Regulation Zone violations, Verma said a decision on this was in the domain of the civilian administration and that he would not like to comment on that.
