Cancer, math research honored in youth competition
NEW YORK — A New York high school student has won a prestigious science competition for a project examining resistance to chemotherapy.
The winners of the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology were honored Monday in New York with $100,000 prizes.
The individual winner was 17-year-old Ruoyi Jiang (Ru-OY’ JANG) of East Setauket, N.Y., for his chemotherapy project.
The winning team of 18-year-old Sean Karson of Winter Park, Fla., 16-year-old Dan Liu of Austin, Texas, and 17-year-old Kevin Chen of Sugar Land, Texas, collaborated to shed new light on a 30-year-old math problem.
The Siemens Competition was begun in 1998 to recognize America’s best math and science students.
