CHANDIGARH - Bright sunshine greeted people at most places across Punjab as the 61st Republic Day was celebrated Tuesday with official and private functions.

New Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil unfurled the national flag at Fatehgarh Sahib, about 60 km from here.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal unfurled the flag and took salute from marching contingents at the industrial hub of Ludhiana, about 110 km from here. There was bright sunshine in Ludhiana Tuesday, after several foggy days.

Badal’s son and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal unfurled the flag at Amritsar.

Tight security measures were in place across the state, particularly after incidents in the last one week in which explosive material was recovered at three different places near Nabha, Zirakpur and Jagraon.

In neighbouring Haryana, Governor Jagannath Pahadia hoisted the flag at Gurgaon, adjoining national capital New Delhi.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda unfurled the flag at Jhajjar town.
