Canada Forestry companies to limit logging

TORONTO — Canada’s major pulp and paper companies have agreed to restrict logging in the country’s northern boreal forest as part of a groundbreaking deal with environmental groups.

The Forest Products Association of Canada said Tuesday its members will suspend logging for three years on 75 million acres (30 million hectares) of boreal forest — an area roughly the size of Montana — where wildlife and habitat is endangered.

The moratorium will allow for the development of a plan to preserve the 36,000 woodland caribou living in the region.

In exchange, environmental organizations have pledged to suspend their international “Do Not Buy” campaigns against products made from boreal forest trees.
