SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- The General Medical Council in UK found Dr. Andrew Wakefield guilty of ’serious misconduct’ and his name was struck off the country’s medical register. The doctor who was responsible for the relating autism and bowel diseases to the MMR vaccine has been banned from practicing in the UK. His research in 1998 led to many parents avoiding the vaccine which in turn caused the outbreak of measles in the UK. The situation is yet to recover. Many studies by other scientist failed to connect any of the diseases to the vaccine.
The Council was reportedly unhappy with the doctor and his team’s method of research. In January Dr. Andrew Wakefield and his team were charged by the GMC for showing ‘callous disregard’ for the children during the research. The doctor reportedly took blood samples from children on his son’s birthday party and paid them 5 pounds each. Dr. Andrew Wakefield said in a statement that it was an effort on behalf of the government to silence him and undermine his research to suppress the measles-vaccine scandal.
The chairman of the panel, Dr. Surendra Kumar, charged Dr. Andrew Wakefield with a total of 30 charges and said that he was responsible for bringing the medical profession to shame and added that his action had multiple counts of serious professional misconduct. His research in The Lancet in 1998 was misleading and irresponsible. The research was also removed from public record by the council. The doctor who is presently settled in the US has 28 days to appeal against the judgment. He maintains that the allegations against him are ‘unfounded’ and ‘unjust’.
