Ind. Univ. gets $9.2M grant for 2 global networks

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University has won a $9.2 million federal grant to lead two high-speed global networks intended to boost scientific collaborations between U.S., European and Asian researchers.

The National Science Foundation grant will be split between expanding the existing TransPAC3 network to Asia and creating a new connection to Europe called ACE.

Indiana university will work several U.S. and international partners.

University President Michael A. McRobbie says the high-speed networks will allow collaborations between scientists on different continents that “couldn’t even be imagined just 20 years ago.”

One project is a network of 36 radio telescopes in western Australia designed to act as a single giant radio telescope.
