IAEA chief Yukiya Amano to visit Mumbai, Kalpakkam

MUMBAI - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Geneal Yukiya Amano will visit the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) here next week and interact with top nuclear scientists in the city, an official said Friday.
Amano will arrive Monday to inaugurate the 21st annual conference of the Indian Nuclear Society (INS) on ‘Impact of Radiation Technology on Human Health and Environment’.
The INS, formed in 1988, consists of scientists, engineers and technologists from nuclear and other research institutions, academia and industries. It aims at creating public awareness about the benefits nuclear energy and its applications.
The IAEA chief will visit the BARC and the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai during the trip.
Amano will also interact with the top Indian nuclear scientists and present the Society’s Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award to Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission who played a key role in materialising the Indo-US nuclear deal.
He will also give away the Outstanding Service Award, Young Scientists and Engineers Award and the Science Communication Award.
On Tuesday Amano will travel to Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu which hosts installations like the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India’s reactors.
