CHANDIGARH - No flights operated from Chandigarh, most trains ran behind schedule and road traffic was reduced to a snail’s pace as a thick blanket of fog enveloped most parts of Punjab and Haryana Wednesday.

“No flight has operated from the Chandigarh airport due to poor visibility. The weather is foggy not only in Chandigarh but also around Delhi. Nobody can help in such a situation,” H.S. Toor, director of the Chandigarh airport, told IANS.

Scores of passengers were stranded at the Chandigarh airport.

I had to take a connecting flight from Delhi. But upon reaching here I found that my flight had been cancelled. I am going to hire a taxi, Nishant Bakshi told IANS.

Cold winds swept the region Wednesday and kept the mercury below average levels.

Haryana’s Narnaul town was the coldest in the region at a low of 2.7 degrees Celsius. Ambala town shivered at 5.3 degrees.

Hisar, Karnal and Bhiwani towns registered minimum temperatures of 5.5, 5 and 3.8 degrees respectively.

Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 5 degrees, nearly three notches below Tuesday.

“Due to fog, there was almost zero visibility in various cities of Punjab and Haryana this morning. Overcast conditions are prevailing in most parts of this region. We expect similar conditions the next few days,” said an official of the weather department.

Amritsar was freezing at 3.2 degrees, while Patiala and Ludhiana cities recorded 3.8 and 4.6 degrees respectively.
