Slight respite from chill in Kashmir, snowfall likely

SRINAGAR - Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, battling with an extreme winter chill, got some relief as the overcast night skies brought down the minimum temperature slightly Wednesday morning. Moderate to heavy snowfall is likely in the valley.
“The minimum temperature was minus 0.5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar today which is one degree below normal while it was 4.2 degrees in Jammu which is four degrees less than the normal,” R.L. Pandita, assistant director at the weather office here, told IANS.
The minimum temperature in the two cities was zero degrees and 5.7 degrees Tuesday.
Pandita said the minimum temperature in Leh was minus 17.1 degrees while it was minus 15.0 degrees in Kargil town of Ladakh region.
“In Gulmarg ski resort, it was minus 8.5 degrees while in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam hill station it was minus 2.5 degrees,” the meteorologist said.
“A western disturbance is presently moving over Jammu and Kashmir. We expect moderate to heavy snowfall in the next 24 hours here,” he added.
Damp weather is likely to continue up to Jan 16, after which we are in for another spell of dry and cold weather, Pandita said.
