Chilly winds add to bitter cold in Kashmir

SRINAGAR - Chilly winds heightened the cold in Jammu and Kashmir Monday. Kargil town in Ladakh region was the coldest, recording the minimum temperature of 16.8 degrees Celsius below the freezing point under a clear sky.
“The minimum temperature recorded in Leh town was minus 14.4 degrees while it was minus 16.8 degrees in Kargil town of Ladakh region. The clear night skies have resulted in the temperatures taking a further dip,” said R.L. Pandita, assistant director of the weather office here.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 4.1 degrees against Sunday’s minus 3.7 degrees. In Pahalgam hill station, it was minus 9.6 degrees against 16.1 degrees below zero Sunday. Gulmarg ski resort recorded the minimum temperature of minus 13 degrees.
Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 5.1 degrees.
The minimum temperature was two degrees below normal in Srinagar and three degrees below normal in Jammu today (Monday),” Pandita said.
Pandita said light rain or snow was expected in the valley Monday and Tuesday because of a light western disturbance.
The valley also had heavy frost, causing the road conditions across the valley to become extremely slippery.
Drivers and pedestrians have been advised to move about cautiously as the road conditions are slippery this time. Due to highly slippery road conditions, traffic will move from Jammu to Srinagar but no vehicle will be allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu on the highway,” said an official of the provincial administration here.
