CHANDIGARH - A cold wave has gripped the union territory of Chandigarh and the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana, lowering the temperatures and forcing people to wear more woollens.

The holy city of Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest in the region with a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in Ludhiana and Patiala cities was 4 and 4.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In Haryana, Ambala was the coldest at 1.3 degrees Celsius. Bhiwani and Karnal towns recorded minimum temperature of 4.4 and 2.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, experienced the coldest day of the season Sunday at 3.9 degrees Celsius.

“We are expecting a further dip in the mercury in the coming days. There was dense fog in various parts of the region like Ambala, Sirsa, Karnal, Bhathinda and Amritsar towns on Sunday,” a weather department official said Sunday.
