CHANDIGARH - Dense fog and the chilly weather continued in this union territory and neighbouring states Punjab and Haryana Friday.

Fog has engulfed the entire region, reducing visibility to below 100 metres. The intense cold wave, due to the melting of the Himalayan snow, is all across the region causing a dip in the mercury, said a Met official here.

Amritsar city of Punjab was the coldest in this region with a minimum temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees below average.

In Punjab, Ludhiana and Patiala cities registered a minimum temperature of 5.7 and 6.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

The centrally administered city of Chandigarh registered a minimum temperature of 5.1 degrees Celsius.

The foggy weather and overcast conditions have derailed road, rail and air traffic of this region. The weatherman has predicted that similar conditions would continue in the coming days.

In Haryana, the minimum temperature at Ambala was recorded at 4.6 degrees Celsius, which was also two degrees below average during this time of the year.

In contrast Hisar and Karnal cities in Haryana, were comparatively warmer Friday. They recorded a minimum temperature of 7.2 and 7.3 degrees Celsius respectively.
