Kerry, Pickens: Odd couple of climate legislation
WASHINGTON — Call them the odd couple of climate change.
Six years ago, oilman T. Boone Pickens paid millions to support TV ads run by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group that attacked Democrat John Kerry’s Vietnam War record in the 2004 presidential campaign.
On Wednesday, the Texas oilman visited Kerry to endorse a sweeping climate change bill the Massachusetts senator is pushing in the Senate.
Kerry called the Swift Board ads old news and said he did not live his life looking backward. Pickens, who has been promoting his “Pickens Plan” to boost production of natural gas and domestic energy sources, said he was “out of politics,” but supported the bill sponsored by Kerry and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. The bill encourages use of wind power and natural gas.
