SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- The discovery of the new planet which is around 20 light year far in the universe from our solar system has created a stir among the astronomers and scientists. The discoverers have claimed that the new found planet has many similarities with planet earth. The planet was traced by a team guided by the University of California. It has a lot of similarities with earth including the environment, water and may be traces of life! The new planet has been given a code name Gliese 581g. The discoverers are guessing it might even contain lakes or oceans just like the Earth.
Professor Steven Vogt the leader of the team that found the planet Gliese 581g said that the planet has the potential to contain forms of life. He said so in a news conference held in recent times. The findings are backed by nearly 11 years of study done by the WM Keck Observatory of Hawaii. The planet revolves round a smallish red star code named Gliese 581. The distance of the planet as said earlier is 20 light years or 172 trillion kms. The distance of the planet is just suitable from its star to develop life forms.
The planet Gliese 581g rotates very slowly on its axis which means one side gets the heat of the star while the other side remains dark and cold. The huge distance of the new found planet from Earth makes it impossible to carry out any space expedition there. In future space technology may evolve but even then reaching this planet will remain a serious challenge for the humans.
