Himachal expects snow, rain and intense cold wave

SHIMLA - The cold wave in Himachal Pradesh would further aggravate with the approaching strong western disturbances that would bring more snow and rain over the weekend, weather office said here Thursday.

There are chances of widespread rainfall and snowfall in the state Jan 14 and 15 due to western disturbances - storm systems originating from the Caspian Sea in Central Asia and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, an official statement said.

It said most of the tourist places in the state like Narkanda, Manali and Kufri may witness moderate snowfall.

“There are chances of heavy snowfall at isolated places in the state till Saturday,” the statement said.

Shimla received the season’s first snowfall on the New Year’s eve. It was for the first time in eight years that the town experienced snowfall on the last day of the year. The snowfall was around four inches.

Picturesque town of Manali, some 250 km from here, experienced a mild spell of snow Sunday.

It too saw good spells of snow on the last two days of the receding 2010.

The minimum temperature in Shimla was 4.1 degrees Celsius Thursday, while it was minus 6.2 degrees at Kalpa in Kinnaur district, 1.5 degrees at Bhuntar and 4.5 degrees at Dharamsala.
