Two killed by jumbos in Jharkhand

RANCHI - A woman and her daughter were trampled to death by a herd of elephants in Jharkhand’s Gumla district Sunday, an official said.

The herd attacked Karni village under Dumri police station, killing the two and destroying two houses and standing crops.

Two people were Jan 4 trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in Barnanga village of the district, 140 km from Ranchi Jan 4. Six tribals were killed in a similar attacks by the wild tuskers in the district in the week before.

Shrinking forest cover has caused elephants to venture into human settlements on a regular basis in 13 districts of the state.

More than 750 people in the state have been trampled to death in the last eight years.
