CHANDIGARH - Chandigarh and its neighbouring states Punjab and Haryana experienced overcast conditions accompanied with dense fog but got respite from chilly weather Sunday.

The centrally-administered city, which shivered at 2.2 degrees Celsius Saturday, saw an increase in temperature of over 6 degrees in the last 24 hours. The minimum temperature Sunday was recorded at 8.6 degrees Celsius. Bright sunshine greeted the denizens by 10 a.m.

Amritsar city of Punjab was again the coldest in the region Sunday with a minimum temperature of minus 0.8 degrees Celsius. However, Ludhiana and Patiala cities in the state were comparatively warmer registering minimum temperatures of 8.8 and 10.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“Dense fog and cloudy weather have brought some relief from cold weather. In the last 12 hours, we have seen a good increase in temperature, ranging from two to three degrees in most parts of the region,” said a Met official here Sunday.

He added: “We are expecting isolated spells of rain in some parts of Punjab and Haryana in the next 24 hours. December went dry and we had very little rainfall that was far below the average showers during the month in the last few years.”

In Haryana, minimum temperatures at Ambala, Karnal and Hisar towns were recorded at 8.3, 9.5 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively.

Dense fog enveloped most parts of the region Sunday morning reducing the visibility to below 100 meters. Various trains were delayed and many passengers were stranded at railway stations.
