SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Mars coming close to Earth and appearing as big as moon on Friday night was just another hoax that went viral on the web. The Mars close to Earth hoax, that claimed that the Red planet will be coming so close to earth that it will appear just like yet another moon on sky was able to confuse many individuals who went out at night for some sky gazing. However, it is not for the first time that such a hoax has made it to the internet. It was for the seventh consecutive year reportedly that the Mars hoax made its round over the internet.

As per reports, the Mars close to earth hoax made its way over the internet through an email that declared that on the night of Aug 27, the Red Planet Mars will come closer to Earth than it has ever in the last 60,000 years. It would thus provide the sky-gazers with a spectacular view of Mars. The email also proclaims that the plant will appear as bright as the full moon. However, on Aug 27, 2010 whoever believed the statement and went out for sky gazing knows that there was nothing like a second full moon in the sky. The Mars was shining bright but only in its usual tiny shape. The planet is at present 314 million kilometers away from earth and at such distance it would appear just like any other star with a hint of red tinge in it.

However, it would be better to call the e-mail an older one that has been doing round over the internet for too long than a total hoax with no truth contained in it. In reality Mars did come close to earth back in Aug 27, 2003 and passed from a distance as close as 34.6 million miles or 55.7 million kilometers from earth.
