NEW DELHI - Dense fog enveloped the national capital Sunday morning and visibility dropped to near zero, making it difficult for drivers. The weatherman said the skies would clear as the day progressed.

“The early morning fog will clear up later in the day,” an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The fog cover disrupted flight and train schedules in the capital, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

“I was driving to the Metro station at around 7.30 a.m. and it was difficult to see beyond a point,” said Veena Gupta, a resident of Rajinder Nagar.

The minimum temperature recorded was 7 degrees Celsius, a notch below the average for this time of the season.

The maximum is expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius, the IMD official said.

He said the temperatures would fall further due to snowfall in the Himalayas.

The coldest day of the season so far was Dec 22 with a minimum temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius.
