CAPE CANAVERAL (GaeaTimes.com)- The explosion of Space shuttle challenger that took place 25 years ago remains a black spot in the history of NASA and possibly no other space journey related disaster can match its magnitude. The space shuttle exploded just after taking off from Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center. The tragic accident which had claimed the lives of the 7 astronauts on board remains as an example of how things can go wrong even with latest technology and sharpest minds. This in fact was the first large scale high tech disaster that went Live on TV. The students in USA found it painful because among the astronauts was schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe who could not make her first voyage in her life. NASA was possibly a little complacent with 24 safe shuttle launches earlier and elaborate safety measures were not in place before Challenger lifted off on that fateful day. On 25th anniversary of the tragic accident the victims will be remembered with sadness and respect at the Kennedy and Johnson Space Centers.
The event of Space Shuttle challenger will also be remembered at the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Challenger Learning Center today. The New Hampshire residents and teachers are paying tribute to Christa McAuliffe and the students at her high school are also going to pay tribute to her with affection.
Sally Karioth a trauma and grief expert describes the event as “the beginning of the age when the whole world knew what happened as it happened.” After the disaster of Space shuttle Challenger NASA came under fire for not employing adequate safety and escape mechanisms.
